Storm Damage

It is important to get a free roof inspection after a storm because strong winds and hail can cause significant damage to your roof. If left unchecked, these damages can lead to leaks and other major problems if not addressed. With a free roof inspection, a certified roof inspector can identify and repair any damage, helping to prevent further problems and potentially saving you money in the long run.

Commonly Asked Questions

How long does a storm claim usually take?

Most claims take a few weeks from the first call to approval, but it depends on your insurance company and how busy they are after a big storm. The adjuster visit is usually scheduled within one to three weeks. Once the claim is approved and materials are ordered, most roof replacements take one to two days.

Are there fees to file a storm claim?

Insurance companies don’t charge you to file a claim. If the claim is approved, you pay your deductible and the insurance company covers the rest of the approved repair cost. Our storm damage inspection is free.

What are the steps in the storm claim process?

1) Get a free inspection so you know whether there is real damage. 2) Call your insurance company to open a claim. 3) An adjuster inspects the property. We can be there to show them what we found. 4) Your insurer sends a written estimate. 5) Once approved, we schedule the work and handle the cleanup.

Can I file a claim for someone else?

The claim has to be opened by the policyholder. A family member or caregiver can help, but most insurers need the policyholder on the call or written permission before they will talk with anyone else.

What documents do I need?

Have your policy number, the date of the storm, and photos of the damage (inside and out) ready. Our inspection report and photos can support the claim. Keep receipts for any emergency repairs such as tarping.

What coverage do I need for storm damage?

Most standard homeowners policies cover sudden wind and hail damage. Check your declarations page for your deductible, since some policies have a separate wind or hail deductible, and whether your roof is covered at replacement cost or actual cash value.

How does the insurance company decide if a claim is valid?

The adjuster looks for damage caused by a specific storm, such as hail bruises, creased or missing shingles, and dented gutters or vents. Normal wear and aging is usually not covered, which is why it helps to have an inspection soon after the storm.

Are there exceptions?

Policies often limit coverage for roofs past a certain age, cosmetic-only damage, or damage reported long after the storm. Most policies require claims to be filed within a set time, often one year. Read your policy or ask your agent.

What types of storms are usually covered?

Wind, hail, falling trees and lightning are usually covered under a standard homeowners policy. Tornado damage is typically covered as wind damage.

Does my policy cover flooding from a storm?

Usually not. Standard homeowners policies exclude flooding from rising water. Flood coverage is a separate policy, often through the National Flood Insurance Program. Water that comes in through storm damage to the roof is usually covered.

Every policy is different. For questions about your specific coverage, check with your insurance agent. For a free storm damage inspection, call (937) 576-6753.

After a storm: what to do

  1. Stay safe. Don’t climb on a wet or damaged roof.
  2. Stop the water. If water is coming in, call us any time. We offer 24-hour emergency service and can tarp the roof to prevent more damage: (937) 576-6753.
  3. Document it. Take photos of damage inside and out, plus hail stones next to a coin or ruler if you can.
  4. Get a free inspection before you file, so you know whether the damage is enough to be worth a claim.
  5. File with your insurer if we find storm damage, and we’ll meet the adjuster at your home.

Answers to common storm-claim questions

How long does a storm claim usually take?
It varies by insurer. Most homeowners hear back within a few weeks of the adjuster’s visit. Once a claim is approved, we schedule the work as soon as materials and weather allow.
Are there extra fees for filing a claim?
There’s no charge for our inspection or for meeting your adjuster. Your deductible is set by your policy and is your responsibility. Be cautious of any contractor who offers to “cover” or waive it.
What are the steps in the claim process?
Free inspection, then you file the claim, then the adjuster inspects (we can be there), then your insurer issues its estimate. We review it for missed items and submit supplements if needed, do the work, and send the final paperwork to your insurer.
How do I know if hail damaged my roof?
Hail damage isn’t always visible from the ground. Look for dents in gutters, downspouts, vents and siding, and granules washing out of the downspouts. Bruised shingles are best found by a roof-level inspection.
Will a claim raise my premium?
Storm claims are usually treated differently from claims you caused, but it depends on your insurer and policy. Your agent is the best person to ask before you file.
